Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about MVL
What is the purpose of the MVL?
The Metropolitan Volleyball League is an independent, non-revenue-generating volleyball league established to provide a structured and sustainable platform for the growth of volleyball — as a sport and a community — in Lagos.
Our broader objectives are to:
- Give new and existing clubs an avenue to develop players in a high stakes, competitive environment.
- Identify and expose talented players who may otherwise not receive adequate visibility.
- Foster increased camaraderie among the Lagos volleyball community.
- Increase the visibility and popularity of volleyball across Lagos, exposing the sport to new people.
- Contribute to a sustainable and growing volleyball ecosystem.
Through its efforts and potential successes, MVL hopes to encourage the development of volleyball training facilities and stronger club structures in Lagos. The long-term vision is to develop MVL into a properly structured competition with multiple divisions and youth development leagues.

You can register by signifying your club's intent to compete here.
Registration fee applies after approval: ₦50,000 for clubs presenting male and female teams, ₦30,000 for clubs presenting either only a male team or a female team.
Is there prize money?
Yes.
For the maiden season, the proposed prize money is:
Male Category
- 1st Place —₦500,000
- 2nd Place —₦300,000
- 3rd Place —₦200,000
Female Category
- 1st Place —₦500,000
- 2nd Place —₦300,000
- 3rd Place —₦200,000
There will also be individual and other special awards.
These amounts may increase depending on sponsorship and other support secured for the league. Importantly, club representatives will be carried along regarding significant changes or additional opportunities.
Kindly note: MVL is not a revenue-generating venture. Any funds received through registration, sponsorship or other legitimate sources will be reinvested into the league for competition organisation, development, media, logistics, awards and improving the overall quality of the league.
Will MVL select a Lagos State team for national competitions?
No.
The MVL does not have the mandate to select, employ, register or pay players to represent Lagos State at the National Sports Festival or any other state-controlled competition.
The league is only an avenue where talents can be seen, developed and properly showcased.
Where appropriate, the Lagos State Sports Council and the relevant volleyball authorities will be carried along. However, the decision regarding who is selected, employed, paid or nominated to represent Lagos State remains entirely with the appropriate Lagos State sports authorities.
Who is eligible to play in MVL 2026?
All players based in Lagos and/or are verifiable members of teams in Lagos are eligible to play in the Metropolitan Volleyball League.
Limited allowances have been made of players who have recently relocated to Lagos, as well as military and paramilitary officers recently posted to Lagos.
Players that do not meet the criteria, as expanded in the technical guideline shared with club representatives, will not be allowed to play.
Why is the MVL logo compulsory on jerseys?
The MVL logo is intended as a means for league identification, a distinct amplifier meant to assist the league's visibility and attract sponsorship activation. It's compulsory for teams' jerseys to feature the logo on league matchdays.
It does not require clubs to produce completely new jerseys. The logo can be:
- Applied as a patch/printed sticker
- Printed or heat-pressed onto existing jerseys
- Properly stapled/attached where appropriate and safe
We believe this provides a practical compromise between maintaining the identity and professionalism of the league while minimising additional costs for participating clubs.
Is MVL open to external partnerships?
Yes, MVL is open to beneficial partnerships that align with the league's commitment to expanding the visibility of the Lagos volleyball community. The league's working committee is actively seeking out sponsors and partners willing to assist in our short-term goal of putting on a substantive league competition, as well as our long-term objectives.

What makes MVL different?
MVL is intended to be more than a competition.
We want it to become a platform for:

- Volleyball talent discovery
- Volleyball as a wider-known hobby for new people
- Greater public participation and enthusiasm for volleyball support
The maiden season is the foundation. Our future plans include:
- Expansion of the number of participating clubs.

- Increased media coverage and match content.
- Improved player and team statistics.
- Partnerships with training facilities and volleyball development organisations.
- Corporate and community volleyball programmes.
The League Working Committee is open to constructive suggestions from participating clubs, and we encourage representatives to continue asking questions, making recommendations and pointing out areas that require improvement.
Kindly reach out to us, register, compete, and join us in building something worthwhile!
